REAL SPOKEN CHINESE

How do you end a conversation in Chinese without being abrupt?

Signal the end before you end it. Chinese closings wind down through phrases like let us leave it there, I will not keep you, or we will talk another day, and the other side echoes one back before anyone actually leaves or hangs up. Hanging up without the wind down reads as slamming the door.

Nà jiù xiān zhèyàng.

Let us leave it there for now.

Safe with anyone

The universal closer for calls and meetings. The xian promises this is a pause, not an ending, which is why nobody minds it.

Bù dānwu nǐ le.

I will not take up more of your time.

Safe with anyone

Blaming your exit on their busy schedule is the courtesy. It works with a client, a teacher, or a neighbour at the door.

Wǒ hái yǒu diǎn shì, xiān zǒu le.

I have something to take care of, off I go.

Safe with anyone

The vague errand nobody asks about. You are not required to name the thing, and asking would itself be rude.

Huítóu zài liáo.

Talk again soon.

Friends and coworkers

The default ending between friends and coworkers. Nobody checks when huitou actually is, it is a wave, not an appointment.

Nǐ xiān máng.

I will let you get back to it.

Friends and coworkers

Three words that end a chat thread gracefully. You hand them their time back, and they reply with an emoji or a simple ok.

Gǎitiān yìqǐ hē chá.

We should have tea sometime.

Friends and coworkers

The warm fiction that closes a good conversation. Both sides know gai tian may never come, and the warmth is real anyway.

Dào jiā shuō yìshēng.

Message me when you get home.

Friends and coworkers

Said when parting at night. It ends the evening while showing you care about their safety, and people remember the care.

Wǒ mā hǎn wǒ le, guà le.

My mum is calling me, gotta hang up.

Close friends only

The classic fake excuse between friends. Whether or not a mother is involved, it ends the call in four syllables with zero offence.

Xíng le, bù shuō le.

Alright, enough talking.

Close friends only

A blunt full stop, only with people who know you well. With anyone formal it sounds like you are sick of them.

What the labels mean

Safe with anyone
Fine at work, fine with your partner's parents.
Friends and coworkers
Normal among people your own age. Skip it with elders, clients and officials.
Close friends only
Carries a swear or an insult. Only with people who would swear back.
