REAL SPOKEN CHINESE

How do you complain in Chinese without blowing up the relationship?

State the problem, not your anger, and ask for a specific fix. With service staff in Chinese you describe what went wrong and what you want done, and threatening to complain formally is the nuclear option. With friends you vent with an exasperated joke instead of an accusation.

Zhège wǒ bú tài mǎnyì.

I am not quite satisfied with this.

Safe with anyone

Understated on purpose. In Chinese service settings this mild sentence is taken seriously, and it keeps the door open for a fix.

Néng bāng wǒ huàn yíxià ma?

Could you replace it for me?

Safe with anyone

Asking for the fix directly beats describing the fault at length. Staff hear a request they can grant, not a fight.

Wǒ yào tóusù.

I want to file a complaint.

Safe with anyone

The formal escalation word. Say it calmly and it moves mountains; shout it and you become the problem they are managing.

Nǐmen zhè zěnme huí shì?

What is going on here?

Friends and coworkers

The standard opening of a real complaint. It demands an explanation without insulting anyone, and staff know they must answer it.

Wǒ dōu děng bàn xiǎoshí le.

I have been waiting for half an hour.

Friends and coworkers

Facts as complaint. The dou carries the grievance, and stating the wait plainly works better than any adjective.

Zhè yě tài màn le ba.

This is way too slow.

Friends and coworkers

Grumbling within earshot, half to yourself. The ba invites them to fix it before you escalate, and often they do.

Zhǎo nǐmen jīnglǐ lái.

Get me your manager.

Friends and coworkers

Skipping the front line. Use it when the person in front of you cannot solve it, not as an opening move.

Zhēn shì fú le.

I am honestly speechless.

Close friends only

Venting to your own side, not to the culprit. Fu le is surrender as sarcasm, and it is how friends complain to each other.

Qì sǐ wǒ le.

This is driving me mad.

Close friends only

Pure venting for people on your side. It exaggerates on purpose, so it needs a sympathetic ear, not a service counter.

Zhè dōu shénme shìr a.

What kind of nonsense is this.

Close friends only

Resigned exasperation, the sigh at the end of a bad day. Aimed at the universe, which is why it never starts a fight.

What the labels mean

Safe with anyone
Fine at work, fine with your partner's parents.
Friends and coworkers
Normal among people your own age. Skip it with elders, clients and officials.
Close friends only
Carries a swear or an insult. Only with people who would swear back.
